How Can He do Great Things Unless His People Can Believe Him for Great Things?
"...And shall not doubt in his heart, but shall believe that those things which he saith shall come to pass; he shall have whatsoever he saith." -- Mark 11:23
The disciples were greatly astonished by our Savior's talk on the power of faith and by the power displayed in His very words that dried up the fruitless fig tree from the roots up. Jesus was clearly trying to make known the power of God that is made available to us, His people, because of the prayer of faith. Peter was first to discover the withered fig tree and bring it to the Lord's attention. Jesus simply said, "...Have faith in God. For verily I say unto you, that whosoever shall say unto this mountain, be thou removed, and be thou cast into the sea; and shall not doubt in his heart, but shall believe that those things which he [says] shall come to pass; he shall have whatsoever he [says]."
Do we understand this truth about praying without doubt in our hearts? Then it is necessary to think about the words our Savior opened with, "...Have faith in God." These four words reveal this fundamental fact relating to the prayer of faith. Our Lord wants us to see that we can have the faith of God. It would be totally impossible for us to believe that those things that we ask and say in prayer will happen except we have an absolute faith in God.

Again look a little closer at what Jesus said, "...Have faith in God," He is revealing the Source of this priceless possession of this faith that makes it possible us to pray without any doubt in our hearts. His advice for us to have faith in God indicates that all people have an inborn faith resulting from God when He created the first man and woman in His own image. This detail should not seem hard to believe since it is true that God did pass on a measure of His own faith to Adam and Eve at the creation. The value of inherited faith was not destroyed in the fall although it was greatly weakened as a result of disobedience. Jesus made known this amazing truth that we can enjoy a piece of the faith that Almighty God possesses in His own Divine Nature.
As His redeemed people, we do not hesitate to accept the reality that God gives us an openhanded measure of His life and love. Then why would it be impossible for Him to give an ample supply of His faith to His people to help them through life in this world of disbelief and doubt. If we are His people, and are not able to accomplish His works in this world because of our lack of faith, there is no valid reason to doubt that He can and will increase our portion of achieving faith. When the disciples asked, ". . . Lord, Increase our faith," do we have any reasons to believe that Jesus did not grant their request? (Read Luke 17:5 and answer this question yourself)
Jesus never implies that we could have the same measureless level of faith that our never-ending God possesses in His Divine Person. However He did persuade us to believe that we can receive a portion of God's faith to help us to complete His purpose in salvation. The Savior wants us see that we can enter into the faith of God and become workers together with Him in achieving His eternal purpose in His beloved Son. The truth is obvious, that God works in His people and through them according to the amount of their faith. How can He do great things unless His people can believe Him for great things? Christ is made indestructible in this world from beginning to end because of the steadfast faith of His praying people.
