We cannot Hope to Break Away from the Flood of Evil that Strains to Overcome Us by Faithless Prayer
". . . When they had prayed, the place was shaken where they were assembled together; and they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and they [spoke] the word of God with boldness." — Acts 4:31.
The apostles and the many devout believers in Jesus Christ were assembled together in one place for the express purpose of achieving victory by prayer over the opposition of wicked people. And they fully expected the Lord to answer their united prayers in His own way and in His own time. This remarkable manifestation of God showed them then, as will as it shows us now, the full effectiveness of prevailing prayer. It vividly made public the fact that prayer can accomplish much.
It is also obvious that neither the apostles, nor this company of devout believers who had see Jesus' ministry on earth was surprised at this wonderful visitation of God. Perhaps the quaking of the upper room where they were gathered together was an astonishing event, but the receiving of a direct answer to their persistent praying was neither strange nor unforeseen. The believers had come together for the particular reason, to pray to receive a miracle in the spiritual world, not for the purpose of making a spectacle in the natural world.

It is true; we do not need an eye-opening of the supernatural in order to capture the attention of this pleasure seeking world we live in. God will not very often shake off the restraints from His jailed saints, and open the doors of the prison with an earthquake. But He can and will do the unusual and the unexpected when necessary to show His glory.
So, if we do not require the Lord to do something to amaze us; don't you think however, that we do need Him to do something to alert us to our dangerous actions? How long can we ignore the fact that we urgently need a shocking demonstration of God to shake us out of our spiritual laziness and selfish complacency? Do we not substitute a program for power and have only the slightest appearance of hope that the unsaved will be attracted by it? What will it take for us to get with God's purpose?
Here again we have the believers of God praying in their frantic catastrophe when they prayed, "...Lord, behold their threatening ..." We are very aware that some of the most lasting outcomes recorded in God's Holy Bible were accomplished when some committed person prayed in their time of crisis. Some examples that come to my mind are: the destruction of Sodom; how Abraham prevailed with God in prayer when the angelic messengers told him what was going to happen. Moses prayed unrelentingly for the people when they encountered the fierce anger of God because they were worshipping the golden calf. Then another critical time in the nation of Israel's life was when Elijah prayed earnestly for them to see the Glory of God on Mount Carmel. Jesus was also praying in an hour of crisis when He said, "...Father, the hour is come..." So it is the same with the believers in the upper room, they were confronted by a desperate situation when they said, "...Lord, behold their threatening..." With them, it was also a case of life or death, of victory or defeat. The odds against them were tremendously great, but the God that was for them was Almighty.
They could have called a meeting of the "Official Board of the Apostles" to discuss the ways and means of escaping the primary issues involved. They could have taken shelter in an unbelievable doubt saying that nothing could be done to remedy the situation threatening them. Or they could have betrayed themselves by saying that things would work out acceptably for all parties involved.
But no, thanks' be to our Father, there is nothing at all in God's sacred records to show us that they had the slightest intent to compromise the truth in order to have favor with people. They were all willing to acknowledge the conflict that tested their faith and hope in God. In the sight of the Lord, these Jesus believers did what was the most natural thing; they assembled together with one accord in prayer, they lifted up their voice in one determined petition to Him for help.
We the believers in this time of grace had better wake up and pray. We need to be impressed by the victory reached by this small praying company of saints. Of course there are many things that threaten us today. We are threatened with serious turmoil that cannot be conquered unless we keep our strength renewed through prevailing prayer. We cannot hope to break away from the deluge of evil which threatens to overpower us, the believers of today, unless we are constantly replenished and re-invigorated by the Holy Spirit.
