Our Lord will Work Wonders in this Age of Indifference if We will Stop Limiting Him by Our Unbelief

Tip! So it is the same elsewhere in the Holy Bible (James 1:5) we have “asking” put into view as a prayer: “If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all men liberally, and upbraiding [scolding somebody] not, and it shall be given him.

"And now, Lord, behold their[threatening]: and grant unto thy servants, that with all boldness they may speak thy word, By stretching forth [Your] hand to heal; and that signs and wonders may be done by the name of thy holy child Jesus." -- Acts 4:29-30

It is very obvious that from these words of the Holy Bible that these new Christians fully expected miracles to accompany the preaching of God's Word. Wow! Look again at these words; the prayer for boldness to speak God's Word also included the petition for healing, and signs and wonders. It is interesting to note that the order of the prayer places the preaching of the Word first before the performing of miracles in the name of Jesus.

Our Lord Jesus always placed more importance on preaching and teaching than He did on His bountiful ministry of healing the sick, and the showing of signs and wonders. But, we should not assume that such miracles could not be worked through the power of prayer in this day and age and with this present generation. The healing of the sick, and the signs and wonders that are performed in the name of Jesus, only go hand in hand with the preaching and teaching of God's Word.

When we give thoughtful attention to the importance of prayer this fact is clearly seen. The prayer for miracles exposes the true idea concerning the power of Jesus to heal. They asked that, "By stretching forth [Your] hand to heal..." The very presence of Jesus was so real to these praying saints that they asked Him to stretch forth His nail-scarred hand and heal the people. Because they believed in their hearts, Jesus did stretch forth His hand and touched the sick bodies of people, and they were immediately made well. Just because Christ has ascended to heaven should not changed our concept of His Divine Person. Like He did in the days when He was here on earth, Jesus is willing and able to stretch forth His hand and heal our broken bodies today. So what is the problem?

I am fully persuaded and believe that the professing Christians of today would see many more miracles of healings worked by the hand of Jesus if they would spend more time in earnest prayer for the messengers of the Gospel. The messengers of the Gospel are the ones who preach and teach the Word of God; the pastors, evangelist, Sunday school teachers, music ministers, youth ministers, missionaries and leaders of the church of Jesus. You know who they are, so pray for them that God will "…grant unto thy servants, that with all boldness they may speak thy word..." I am also certain that our Lord will work wonders in this age of indifference, but only if we will stop limiting Him by our unbelief, and recognize the fact that miracles can be performed today by the same outstretched hand of the Holy Child Jesus, because He is the same yesterday, today and forever.

All of us as God's servants should think that there is nothing pertaining to the church of Christ more important than the waiting before the Lord in a secret place of prayer. If man of God loses his passion for souls it is because he has deliberately neglected to pray. He has no choice but to wait until his soul is on fire with holy zeal, and his mind motivated with fresh news from heaven. When he takes the proper time to pray, his preaching will inform, educate, instruct and enlighten the Christians, and the fruitfulness of his ministry will be enlarged. Luke the inspired writer revealed some amazing results from this ministry of prayer of the first church when he wrote,

Tip! Jesus said they were to do even greater works than He had achieved during His ministry in the world. Wow! Then our Master went on to show them that by praying in His Name, Jesus, this is the channel through which the authorized power is acquired to carry out the works that glorify our Father in the Son.

"And with great power gave the Apostles witness of the resurrection of the Lord Jesus: and great grace was upon them all." - Acts 4:33

It is evident that a devoted minister can perform his work for Christ more competently when he knows that the Christians of the church want to hear the Word of God and are supporting him with their prayers and faith. Then why is it not unusual to hear some ministers say they are so burdened with the work of the church that they have very little time to spend in earnest prayer? Why is the preaching in the churches so poor and boring today? Why is it possible for a minister to become so preoccupied with his duties that he will give prayer a place of secondary importance in his life?

The record shows that Peter and John had joined the company of saints in the fellowship of prayer. This fact shows that the messengers of Christ must understand the necessity of prevailing prayer in the church of Jesus Christ as well as in a secret place of prayer. We as the servants of Christ must take on the duties of the church so that the messengers of the Gospel can wait until their souls are on fire with holy zeal, and their minds are motivated with fresh news from heaven. Then will Jesus be willing and able to stretch forth His hand and heal our broken bodies today.
